Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how a page feels to real visitors. They are part of how Google assesses page experience, and more importantly, they reflect whether people stay or leave.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast it looks ready

LCP measures how long it takes for the biggest element in view, usually a hero image or headline, to appear. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less good.

Common fixes: faster hosting, properly sized and compressed images, serving images in modern formats, page caching, and not lazy-loading the main hero image.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly it responds

INP replaced First Input Delay in 2024. It measures how quickly the page responds visually when someone taps or clicks. 200 milliseconds or less is good.

Common fixes: removing unused plugins and scripts, delaying non-essential third-party code such as chat widgets, and avoiding heavy page-builder add-ons.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): does the page jump around?

CLS measures unexpected movement, such as text shifting when an image or ad loads. A score of 0.1 or less is good.

Common fixes: setting width and height on images and embeds, reserving space for banners, and loading web fonts carefully.

Lab data vs. field data

Tools like PageSpeed Insights show two kinds of data. Lab data is a simulated test, useful for diagnosing problems. Field data comes from real Chrome users over the past 28 days and is what Google uses for assessment. A new site may not have field data until it has enough traffic.

Where WordPress sites usually lose speed

  1. Cheap, overcrowded shared hosting
  2. Huge uncompressed images uploaded straight from a phone or camera
  3. Too many plugins, especially ones that load scripts on every page
  4. No page caching or CDN
  5. Heavy sliders, animations and third-party embeds above the fold

Speed is not everything

A fast page with weak content will not rank. But a slow page undermines good content. Treat speed as a foundation, not the goal.

Our managed WordPress hosting includes server caching and a CDN, and every site we build is tuned for Core Web Vitals before launch.
